About

larryportraitamazon2Welcome to Larry Weirather’s About Page.  My writing experience includes writing fiction and nonfiction books with and without an agent, both self-publishing and going the mainstream publishing route, and journaling,   In recent years, researching and writing historical nonfiction or biography has consumed most of my time, although writing articles and poems always find time to be produced as welcomed breaks around the edges of the big projects.  Poetry splits the difference between nonfiction and fiction, resolving the problem of whether to write fiction or nonfiction.  Other writing venues have included producing a screenplay, as well as working as a newspaper journalist, magazine editor, book reviewer, writing instructor and technical writer.  In short, I enjoy all forms of writing with their separate challenges.

“Follow your obsession” makes perfect writing sense to me.   Because of that, I am not an author that writes on a set schedule everyday, although I do write most days.  When I write, I write.  When I don’t, I don’t.  Too many other obsessions outside of writing that can inform the writing!

I consider myself incredibly lucky as a writer.   It’s not everyday that a publisher asks if an author might have another book that could be published, but that has happened to me.  Usually publishing is a case of seemingly endless submissions and rejections before acceptance.  At one point, because of some article ideas I proposed to one of the leading sporting magazines (a first submission to the magazine), the editor even asked if I would consider becoming its hunting and fishing editor and writer for the Western states.  Some of my poems also luckily won some poetry contests.  Most of all, I twice had the luck to do workshops in Ireland with Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney.
